In this intimate 41-minute documentary, visionary space architect Constance Adams gives her final interview, reflecting on a career devoted to helping humans thrive in extreme environments. From designing skyscrapers for Kenzo Tange to developing habitat concepts for NASA missions to Mars, her work was guided by a single question: What do humans truly need to flourish when everything familiar is stripped away? The result is a series of groundbreaking architectural innovations that continue to inform how humans will live in space - and on Earth.
Facing terminal cancer, Adams transforms lessons from space exploration into a blueprint for confronting climate change on Earth, offering a profound meditation on creativity, resilience, and what it means to live well. Drawing on Adams's archives, housed at Yale University, the film animates her notebooks, sketches, and ideas, weaving them together with her final interview to bring her visionary thinking vividly to life. The result is both a portrait of an extraordinary designer and a deeply human reflection on how we might adapt, endure, and imagine new futures.

Reviews "With a creative, almost punk-like imagination, we see that creativity, hope over fatalism, and faith in the future can ignite the driest engineering fields. An individual facing their own mortality, with little time left on Earth, uses those moments in the best possible way to help humanity plan for a future of uncertainty. We learn that the principles of living in space are the same as living on Earth, and not only in terms of practical survival skills. This also applies to love, hope, creative imagination, and finding reasons to live for the better. Humanity can create a brighter inner space as much as in outer space." Francis French, Space Historian, Co-author, In the Shadow of the Moon: A Challenging Journey to Tranquility and An Unlikely Astronaut
"This revelatory portrait of Constance Adams is as expansive as the ideas that defined her life. Getting to know this incredible scientist through her own words is both deeply personal and profoundly inspiring. This wonderful documentary is a moving testament to an extraordinary thinker whose ideas pushed the boundaries of what and where we call home." Shohini Ghose, Professor of Physics and Computer Science, Director, Centre for Women in Science, Wilfrid Laurier University, Author, Her Space, Her Time: How Trailblazing Women Scientists Decoded the Hidden Universe
"Constance Adams' work reminds us of what the ultimate purpose of human space exploration should be: not escaping to a Planet B, but bringing new knowledge, technologies, and perspectives back to Earth. The Space Architect is a reminder that our greatest challenges can only be solved by working together as one crew aboard a shared Mothership. It also highlights the barriers that women in STEM continue to face, despite their talent, creativity, and resilience. I find it deeply motivating and believe it should be seen by anyone working in the space sector, and beyond." Rosa Santomartino, Assistant Professor in Space Bioengineering, Cornell University
"The Space Architect is an inspirational film that celebrates the life and legacy of Constance Adams, a pioneer whose ideas continue to influence how we imagine humanity's future in space. Rich in both content and human storytelling, this documentary offers valuable educational insights while conveying a sense of optimism and possibility. I highly recommend it for community and educational screenings, where it can spark meaningful conversations about creativity, exploration, and our shared future." Victoria Coverstone, Emeritus Professor of Aerospace Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
"This is the deeply human story of a complex engineer designing her life her own way, and changing the way humans think about space exploration forever." Lindy Elkins-Tanton, Professor of Earth and Planetary Science, University of California - Berkeley
"The Space Architect looks at the contributions of Constance Adams, a NASA architect who worked on designs that will make it possible for humans to travel to Mars. But Adams was also a humanist who understood the interconnectedness of the human race and Mother Earth. This film reminds us that our planet is fragile but also resilient, and that together we can save it. The film is about so much more than spaceflight or ecology and is a necessary playbook for our future." Amy Foster, Associate Professor of History, University of Central Florida, Author, Integrating Women into the Astronaut Corps: Politics and Logistics at NASA, 1972-2004
"This is an inspiring film about space architect Constance Adams and her incredible body of work. I am so grateful to the team who helped make this film possible so audiences near and far can remember her, understand her, and build on her legacy." Melodie Yashar, Space Architect, Technologist, Researcher, Founder of AENARA
"This is a must-watch for those interested in women in STEM or who want a sustainable planet for our future. It presents the exceptional life of Constance Adams, a developer of space habitats for astronauts to thrive in space. Before dying of terminal cancer, Constance emphasizes spaceflight's lessons of teamwork, and that 'many different minds contributing to the conversation' were needed to combat climate change. Collective action from the hard and soft sciences, healthcare, and the humanities is desperately necessary to save mankind and our mothership, Earth. The time to act is now!" Erinn McComb, Professor of History, Del Mar College, Author, Gender and the Race for Space: Masculinity and the American Astronaut

"The Space Architect reminds us that spaceflight is ultimately about people, and that's why we build rockets and spacecraft. Constance Adams bridged engineering, architecture, and the human experience. The film is an inspiring tribute to a visionary whose ideas about living and working beyond Earth remain strikingly relevant as we return to the Moon and prepare for missions to Mars." Mason Peck, Professor of Astronautics, Director, NASA NY Space Grant Consortium, Cornell University
"The Space Architect is a film about a professional whose work will have a lasting impact on Earth and elsewhere. But besides that, this documentary is also a portrait of a whole person, and a life cut too short. Space architect Constance Adams is a vivid presence. At every phase of her complex life and work, she embodies the tension between the interdependence needed to build our human cultures and surrounding ecologies, and a kind of radical self-reliance that enables her to invent new worlds." Fred Scharmen, Associate Professor of Architecture, Morgan State University, Author, Space Settlements and Space Forces
