"[A] powerful reminder that while the U.S. war may have officially ended, for those who served it is far from over." Scott Laderman, Prof. History, Univ of MN-Duluth
[Note: Community screenings of AMERICAN SONS can be booked at Bullfrog Communities.]

American Sons is a profoundly intimate documentary that traces the enduring scars of war through the story of Cpl. JV Villarreal, a Mexican American Marine from Texas, killed in action in Afghanistan. Told through JV's own raw, never-before-seen combat footage and the decade-long emotional journey of his Marine brothers and family, the film is both a tribute and a courageous exploration of grief, resilience, and love.

Produced by Laura Varela and Directed by Andrew James Gonzales, both Texas natives, whose cultural roots mirror those of JV., American Sons is more than a war story; it is a meditation on masculinity, community, and the silence that follows trauma. BIPOC veterans have historically been excluded from the dominant narrative of American military service; it is important to acknowledge the vast contributions of these veterans and communities.

Visually arresting and emotionally uncompromising, the film is both a reckoning and a call to action, challenging the nation to confront its obligations to those who serve. In its most powerful moments, American Sons reveals a rare and tender expression of brotherhood, proving the courage to heal can be as profound as the courage to fight.

Reviews
"American Sons is a raw, powerful, and deeply moving documentary that captures the emotional weight of combat and the difficult journey home with rare honesty. Through authentic footage and personal accounts, it confronts PTSD, survivor's guilt, and the lasting impact of service in a way that feels both intimate and essential. This film would be highly valuable in classroom or community settings focused on military experience, mental health, or post-deployment transition, offering viewers a perspective that many veterans, including myself, struggle to put into words."
Jack Wesley Miller, Retired U.S. Air Force Officer, Associate Professor of Strategic Communication, University of Miami

"American Sons is one of the most powerful and impactful movies I have seen for my generation of Veterans. It offers an insight into how much we care for each other and the impact we have on each other. This is a must see for any Veteran that is struggling with that feeling of being alone."
Cory Geisler, U.S. Army Veteran, Commander-in-Chief, Veterans of Foreign Wars

"A powerful documentary highlighting the struggles of a Marine platoon that lost one of their own. American Sons shows us the importance of connection, belonging, and how important and healing it is for us to tell our stories upon our return from war."
Ben Schrader, Iraq War Army Veteran, Director, Adult Learner and Veteran Services, Colorado State University, Author, Fight to Live, Live to Fight: Veteran Activism after War

"By replacing glorified military tropes with honest vulnerability, this accessible documentary humanizes the military experiences of combat veterans. The intimate storytelling places students right in the room with veterans who speak with remarkable frankness. It handles their deep personal pain with dignity rather than exploitation, serving as an excellent discussion starter for any classroom."
Sharon Young, Professor of Social Work, Advisor, Student Veterans Organization, Western Connecticut State University

"Heartbreaking. It's also a beautiful example of men supporting each other...There are other films about vets returning home, but this one is, in every moment, personal. It allows the viewer to see the struggle these men experience, the loss and trauma they have to try to process day by day, in a very immediate way."
Leslie Combemale, Alliance of Women Film Journalists

"Poignant, bittersweet...The various emotional and haunting testimonials by Villareal's brothers in arms, spoken in frank, intimate streetwise vernacular about their PTSD, isolation, alienation, and hopelessness, often rise to the level of working-class, urban free verse poetry."
Roberto Leal, Latin Heat

"An important and poignant exploration of brotherhood, resilience, and community - as well as a call to action to ensure our soldiers are cared for upon their return from service."
Victoria Hope, Amelie Magazine

"With its sobering and emotional exploration of trauma, brotherhood, and the long road to healing, American Sons gives a voice to veterans who often remain unheard. This important documentary is a reminder that our country needs to continue supporting those who have served."
Louisa Moore, Screen Zealots

"For veteran's stories to get out, they must be brought to light...We need more of a focus on helping those who put their lives on the line for our country...American Sons opens the conversations we need to be holding."
Alan French, Sunshine State Cineplex

"Moving...Intimate...Raw and vulnerable."
Lisa Laman, Culturess

"Gonzales really hits home with this documentary. War is brutal. It is messy and unforgiving and in the current military climate, the realities of war and its repercussions are hard to describe to those who have not lived it."
Starry Constellation Magazine

"American Sons opens with Corporal Jorge 'JV' Villarreal, Jr. touring 'the little ghetto room' where he lives in Kajaki, Afghanistan, mentioning in passing Easy Mac and a couple of 'KIAs.' That ordinariness is what makes his death by an IED seven weeks later unbearably concrete. That footage is set against a decade of aftermath: a mother describing the 'knock on the door' and laying out her son's medals; the Marines from his unit at a reunion naming their suicidal thoughts; and JV's squad leader finally saying what happened in the wadi. This documentary is a powerful addition to any syllabus in veterans or military studies, rhetoric and writing, history, Latinx studies, social work, or nursing, and in community screenings co-hosted with a campus veterans center or a local VFW post."
Jim Dubinsky, Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, Associate Professor of English, Founding Co-Chair, Veterans in Society Initiative, Virginia Tech

"American Sons strips away the glossy veneer and shows what real military life, combat, and loss look like. The brotherhood among Marines is unique, and that is nowhere clearer than in Corporal Villarreal's videos from the end of basic training through his deployment. Hearing the Marines acknowledge their readiness to fight with bravado and reckon with not wanting to die is powerful. Watching them navigate the often-insurmountable challenges of losing a brother, coming home to an unfamiliar civilian life, and coping with suicides among their ranks is the reality many Americans miss. When we wave our flags, we need to know why it still matters. Our American Sons."
Sarah Minnis, Associate Professor of Human Resources, Western Carolina University

"Very few Americans serve in the armed forces, and fewer still have served in combat. In deeply moving ways, American Sons shows us the personal hardship, pain, and loss experienced by the nation's frontline troops in Afghanistan. This film offers a powerful reminder that while the U.S. war may have officially ended, for those who served it is far from over."
Scott Laderman, Professor of History, University of Minnesota-Duluth, Author, The 'Silent Majority' Speech: Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, and the Origins of the New Right

"A powerful and deeply moving portrayal of the contradictions inherent in the combat experience. This film beautifully captures how combat can forge some of the deepest and most authentic human connections - bonds that transcend identity, background, and differences - while also leaving lasting wounds of trauma, PTSD, grief, and moral injury. It is an honest and compassionate depiction of both the profound connection these veterans found in one another and the challenges many face in finding their place again after returning home."
Kathryn Barrs, PsyD, Associate Clinical Professor, Military Psychology Specialty, The Sturm Center, University of Denver

"Searing...These profound experiences deeply impact warriors, and the transition to civilian life is immensely difficult. American Sons is a call for an intentional, targeted, and comprehensive system of support for military members who have fought shoulder-to shoulder together and can best process their war experiences and civilian return in conversation with each other. The men and women who raised their hands to serve, knowing they may pay with their lives, deserve the best care and support we can give them. They are telling us what they - and we, as a country - need. I hope we listen."
Jennifer Reddy, Director of Veteran and Military Services, Le Moyne College
