The attempt to end corporal punishment in Nepalese schools.

"Interesting and well done." Jeanne Ballantine, Prof. Sociology, Wright State University

Devendra Ale was a teacher and, like most Nepalese teachers, regularly beat the children in his class. In Nepal, teachers regard beating as the only way of maintaining discipline.

But it was when Devendra quit teaching to work with CVICT, an organization working to rehabilitate victims of torture from Burma and Nepal, that he had a revelation about the damage he'd inflicted on the children in his classroom.

Today he campaigns to end corporal punishment in Nepalese schools. Retracing his story, this film highlights children's rights to be free from all forms of cruel and unnecessary punishment enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Other titles in the series are:

Where Truth Lies - A dramatic case before the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Going Home - 10-year old soldier escapes rebel forces in Sierra Leone.

Till Death Do Us Part - Widows are denied inheritance and property rights in Nigeria.

In the Name of Safety - False imprisonment violates due process in Bangladesh.

Smiles: The Hypocrisy of Thai Politics - The struggle for greater democracy and free speech in Thailand.

Reviews
"Interesting and well done...It would be useful in courses or discussions on how violence is learned, socialization, education and discipline, children."
